  1. Andrew Provost makes a strong point in relation to the effect of the appreciation of the Euro on U.S. exports. With European exports being more attractively priced as a result of the currency shift, this is yet another challenge to the U.S. achieving the goal of doubling exports in five years. A combination of rigorous competition from European exports (among others), the undervaluation of the Chinese remnimbi, the worrisome “let’s get tough with China” trade talk in the U.S. Congress, inaction by Congress on free trade agreements with Korea, Colombia, and Panama, the stalling of the Doha Round, increasing oil prices, and unclear U.S. trade policy will make that goal difficult to realize.
